Choosing a chair lift aid is mostly a process of elimination. Work out how much assistance is genuinely needed, then rule out anything that gives too little or far too much, then check the practical details that decide whether it will actually get used.

Step 1: establish what the person can do
Try this before looking at any product. Sit in a firm dining chair with arms — a higher, harder seat than the usual armchair — and try standing.
- Stands from the dining chair without much trouble. The problem is the furniture, not the person. Chair raisers, a firmer seat base, or a lifting cushion will probably be enough.
- Manages it, but it is hard work. Lifting cushion territory, manual or powered.
- Cannot do it, even with hands on the arms. A cushion is unlikely to bridge the gap. Look at riser recliners, and get an assessment.
- Gets up but is unsteady, dizzy or needs to hold on to walk away. Stop and speak to a GP or physiotherapist. No lift aid addresses balance, and adding one to an unstable situation can make matters worse.
Step 2: seat height
Measure from the floor to the top of the seat cushion, with the person's weight on it. Then check whether their feet sit flat on the floor with knees at roughly a right angle or slightly lower.
If knees are higher than hips, the chair is too low, and that alone may explain the difficulty. Raising the chair is cheaper and simpler than any powered device. More on this in why chair height affects how easy it is to stand up.
Note that adding a cushion also raises the seat — useful, but it can make a tall chair too high, leaving feet dangling, which is its own hazard.
Step 3: chair stability
Any lift aid transmits force into the furniture. Before choosing one, check the chair:
- All feet on the floor, no rocking
- Does not slide on the floor or rug when pushed
- Does not tip forward when weight moves to the front edge
- Frame is sound, joints are not loose
- Not on castors
A wobbly chair rules out cushions and handles, and is a reason to consider a riser recliner or to replace the chair.
Step 4: dimensions
Measure the seat width and depth. A cushion must sit fully supported, without overhanging the front edge, or it will tip as you rise. Compare against the product's stated size — the MOVI Cushion, for example, is around 53 cm by 53 cm, which suits most armchairs and many sofas but not small or narrow seats.
Also measure the space between armrests. A cushion that is wider than the gap will not go in.
Step 5: weight limits
Every device states a maximum user weight, and it is not a soft figure — exceeding it affects both safety and how well the mechanism performs. On powered cushions, being over the limit typically means a slower and weaker lift. On manual spring cushions, weight matters in both directions: too light and there is not enough compression to give a useful return, too heavy and the return can feel abrupt.
The MOVI Cushion states a maximum of 110 kg. Check the equivalent figure for anything you are considering, and check it against the person's actual weight rather than an estimate.
Step 6: controls
This is the detail most often overlooked, and a common reason equipment goes unused.
- Can the person reach the control from a seated position without twisting?
- Can they operate it with the grip, dexterity and strength they have — including with arthritic hands?
- Is it obvious which way is up and which is down?
- Is there enough tactile or visual feedback to use it without looking?
Step 7: power and charging
For powered devices, ask how many lifts a charge gives, how the battery is removed and charged, and where the charging will physically happen. A battery that has to be carried to a socket in another room will eventually not be charged.
Count the realistic number of uses per day and divide. If the answer is “charging every other day”, be honest about whether that will happen. If not, a manual cushion or a mains-powered riser recliner is the more reliable choice.
Step 8: portability
Ask where the difficulty actually happens. If it is one chair, furniture-based solutions are viable. If it is the lounge, the dining room and other people's houses, portability is worth paying for. If the device will be carried between rooms several times a day, check the weight and whether it has a handle.
Step 9: the carer's perspective
If someone helps regularly, involve them in the decision. Consider whether they will need to position or move the device, whether they can charge it, and whether it reduces the amount of physical help they give. If a helper is currently pulling someone up by the hands or under the arms, that is a risk to both people and a reason to seek an assessment rather than buy equipment.
Step 10: get advice where it is warranted
Involve a professional if there have been falls or near misses, if the difficulty is worsening quickly, if there is pain, dizziness or breathlessness on standing, or if you are unsure which category applies.
