What to Look for in a Powered Lifting Cushion

If you have already decided that a powered lifting cushion is the right category, this is the specification checklist. It is deliberately narrower than our guide to choosing a chair lift aid, which covers choosing between device types.

Nine things decide whether a powered cushion works well in real use.

1. Maximum user weight

The first thing to check, and the one people most often skip. Every powered cushion has a stated maximum. Above it, the pump has more resistance to work against: the lift becomes slower and weaker, and you are outside what the manufacturer has tested.

Check the figure against actual weight, not an estimate. For reference, the MOVI Cushion states a maximum of 110 kg, above which inflation is slower.

2. Dimensions — deflated and inflated

You need both numbers, for different reasons.

  • Deflated footprint tells you whether it fits your chair. It must sit fully on the seat without overhanging the front edge, and it must fit between the armrests.
  • Deflated height tells you how much it raises the seat before it does anything. A thick cushion on an already-tall chair can leave feet off the floor, which is unsafe.
  • Inflated height tells you how much lift you actually get.

The MOVI Cushion is approximately 53 cm wide by 53 cm deep and 16 cm high deflated, rising to around 42 cm inflated. Measure your seat before ordering anything in this category.

3. Height range suitability

Cushions in this category are built around assumptions about body proportions, and manufacturers sometimes state a height guide. MOVI's stated guidance is that the cushion is best suited to users of around 5 ft 6 and above. If you are shorter than a product's guidance, the geometry of the lift may not sit well — worth checking rather than assuming.

4. Lift speed

Powered cushions inflate over several seconds rather than instantly. Faster is not automatically better — a gradual, predictable rise is easier to control — but you should know the number so it is not a surprise. The MOVI Cushion inflates in around ten seconds.

5. Battery and charging

Ask three questions:

  • How many lifts per charge? Compare against realistic daily use. Twenty lifts is roughly a week for someone getting up three times a day, and roughly two days for someone up ten times a day.
  • How is it charged? A removable battery charged by a standard cable is easier to manage than carrying the whole cushion to a socket. The MOVI Cushion uses a removable USB-C battery.
  • Where will charging happen? If the answer involves another room and a set of stairs, it will not happen reliably.

6. Controls

The most common reason a device goes unused is that the person cannot operate it comfortably. Check that the control is reachable from a seated position without twisting, that it can be worked with the hand strength and dexterity the user actually has, and that up and down are unambiguous. If arthritis affects the hands, try to test this rather than assume.

7. Base grip and stability

A cushion that slides on the seat as you push down is both frustrating and unsafe. Look for a genuinely non-slip underside. Note that grip works with the chair, not instead of it — on a slippery leather seat or a sagging sofa cushion, even a good base will struggle. The MOVI Cushion has a non-slip base, but the chair still needs to be stable and firm.

8. Materials and comfort when deflated

The cushion is a seat cushion for the vast majority of the time it is in use. If it is uncomfortable to sit on, it will be moved off the chair and then it is not there when needed. Look at what the top layer is made from — memory foam or a similar supportive foam, rather than a bare inflatable surface — and whether the cover can be cleaned or removed.

9. Warranty, support and returns

Powered devices have components that can fail. Check the warranty length, what it covers, whether replacement batteries are available separately, and how support is contacted.

Check the returns position carefully too, and read it before ordering rather than after. Hygiene-related restrictions are common on seating and personal-use products across this market, so do not assume a standard change-of-mind return will apply.

One thing a specification cannot tell you

No specification tells you whether a lifting cushion is the right category at all. If the person cannot take weight through their legs, or is unsteady once standing, the best cushion on the market will not help.
