Seat-assist cushions come in two mechanically different forms. Manual cushions store energy from your own body weight in a spring or gas strut and give it back when you stand. Powered cushions use a battery and a pump to do the lifting on demand.

How each one behaves
Manual
You sit down, and your weight compresses the mechanism. It stays compressed while you sit. When you want to stand you lean forward, which releases the mechanism, and it pushes the seat up and forward as you rise.
The important consequence: the amount of assistance is set by how much you weigh. The spring is doing exactly as much work as your body put into it.
Powered
You sit down on a flat cushion — nothing is compressed. When you want to stand, you press a control and a pump inflates the cushion, raising and tilting you. The assistance comes from the battery, not from you.

Where manual cushions fall down
The weight-band problem. Because the spring is calibrated to a range, someone at the light end may find it barely helps — there was not enough weight to compress it usefully. Someone at the heavy end may find the return faster and firmer than they expected. Both complaints are common, and neither is a fault as such; it is inherent to the design.
Sitting down. Lowering yourself in a controlled way against a spring needs eccentric leg strength — the same strength that is often already the problem. Some people find sitting down harder than standing up.
No adjustment on the day. Assistance is what it is. It does not adapt to a stiffer morning.
Where powered cushions fall down
